This final album of the 2005 trilogy just proves once again that Ryan Adams has no concept of self editing. This works equal parts in his favour and against him. Where ‘Cold Roses' could've been condensed to a single brilliant album and ‘Jacksonville City Nights' chopped in half, on ‘29' Adams has opted for only 9 tracks, each track documenting a year in his 20's and what we're given is a stunning, often haunting piece of work. The opening drums of the song ‘29' could quite easily morph into Bob Dylan's ‘Rainy Day Women #12 & 35', but then he's never been afraid to show his influences. ‘Night Birds' is simply gorgeous and ‘Starlight Diner' evokes images of a ‘rainy New York', showing that Adams is back to his best. But don't be surprised if he U-Turns...
