Utterly Monkey
Nick Laird’s first novel is a great, fast paced story. When young lawyer Danny Williams' old friend Geordie pitches up on his doorstep an extraordinary series of events provide the author with an enjoyable vehicle through which to look at the ties between our adult lives and our childhood experiences. Geordie's reappearance highlights the extent to which Danny's lucrative new job and London life are irreconcilable with his youth in Ballyglass, a small town in the centre of Northern Ireland. The title of the novel refers to a bawdy shared memory that Danny, at least, would prefer to forget but as the novel progresses it become clear that there is plenty in his present reincarnation that runs against his nature. A thoroughly enjoyable read, Utterly Monkey reminds us that our present should accomodate our past selves and future aspirations.
